How to Be More Visible and Build Your Personal Brand
I’ve always wanted to be seen and heard. When I started my career as a journalist at just 14, I wasn’t chasing fame—I wanted to make an impact. Journalists don’t just talk; they make people listen, feel, and think.
That’s when I realized the power of visibility. Being visible means standing out, being unique, and showing the world what makes you special. It’s the heart of building a personal brand.
We’re all like products on a shelf, surrounded by millions of others. If we don’t stand out, we’ll just blend in. Over the years, as a journalist, copywriter, creative director, and communications strategist, I’ve learned that the most successful people make their personal brand impossible to ignore.
Here are my five tips to help you do the same on LinkedIn:
1. Know Who You Are
Before you start posting or connecting with people, take a moment to reflect: Who are you? What do you stand for? What makes you different? Write it down.
This is your personal brand. It’s the foundation of everything you do on LinkedIn. For example, I define myself as: "A bold and creative communications expert with experience in journalism and advertising." These words guide every post I write and every comment I make.
2. Find Your Voice
Your voice is what makes people stop and pay attention. Think about how you want to sound. Are you energetic or calm? Funny or serious? Friendly or professional?
For me, my voice is emotional and empathetic, with a sprinkle of irony. I like using questions and short, punchy sentences that stick. Find what feels right for you, and let people recognize your personality in every post.
3. Show Your Expertise
What are you passionate about? What do you know inside and out? Share that!
For me, it’s branding. Every Friday, I write a post about a brand that inspires me. It’s fun, and it shows people what I care about and how I think. You can do the same—choose a topic you love and make it yours.
4. Connect and Engage
LinkedIn isn’t just about posting; it’s about building relationships. Follow people in your industry, comment on their posts, and join the conversation.
When someone replies to your comment, don’t be shy—reach out and connect. The more you engage, the more visible you become, and the more opportunities will come your way.
5. Keep Growing
Your personal brand is like a garden—it needs care and constant growth. Learn new skills, try new things, meet new people, and share your journey with your LinkedIn network.
Every time you grow, your audience will notice. They’ll see that you’re evolving, and they’ll want to follow along. Never stop surprising them.
Being visible takes effort, but it’s worth it. It’s how you show the world who you are and what you can do. So, go out there, share your story, and don’t be afraid to stand out.
